History of the Mini Aussie
|
During the 1960's a California woman acquired a few small working (rodeo) Australian Shepherds. Pleased with their size and encouraged by her dogs' veterinarian, she began a breeding program based heavily on line-breeding and selecting for size. This soon resulted in litters of widely ranging mature sizes with some puppies reaching only 13 to 14 inches at adulthood. These dogs were still registered as Australian Shepherds with NSDR only later becoming officially know as "Miniature" Australian Shepherds. Since that time, the popularity of the mini Aussie has grown and attracted new enthusiasts as well as established Australian Shepherd breeders. One can find mini Aussies in all areas in which the Australian Shepherd excels: herding agility, conformation. obedience, tracking, and as an active and intelligent companion. The mini Aussie has all the attributes of the larger Australian Shepherd but the advantages of a smaller dog. They weigh between 15 to 30 lbs at maturity and range from under 14" for toys, and 14" to 17" for mini's. They come in coat colors of blue merle, red merle, black or red tri. Most with tan and white trim. Their eyes may be blue, brown, hazel, green, one of each, flecked or marbled. The disposition of the mini Aussie is calm and confident, but suspicious of strangers. They are entirely devoted to their owner and will go to great lengths to please. Ours are raised in our home with our children in a loving family atmosphere.
